ING New York City Marathon - Second Marathon
November 1, 2009

Central Park Hills!
Finished in 3:51:25 - 8:40 pace
I'm still not sure how I got so lucky to be chosen in the NYC Marathon lottery, considering 102,486 people applied! The only way in is to qualify, be chosen in the lottery or run for charity.
Once I got in, my goal became to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I know that may have been a bit aggressive considering it was only my second marathon, but I felt so comfortable in my first one that I thought I had a chance. I can run a 1:43 half marathon, which should give me just enough space to qualify for Boston and finally tackle my home turf.
I was well positioned at the front of a wave, so the crowd of runners was not a problem. I was not, however, prepared for the level of excitement. The cheering New Yorkers will make you run fast whether you want to or not! I ended up running the first half at about the same pace I'd run a half marathon. Oops! That left me with little energy reserve to finish strong. I missed qualifying for Boston by about 11 minutes. I know better for next time. Besides, I had an amazing run and a small part in history. This year's record-breaking race featured the largest field of participants to ever run in a marathon: 43,475 finishers.

Big Sur International Marathon - My First Marathon
April 26, 2009
Finished in 4:24:39 - 10:06 pace
There are no words to describe the feeling of running Big Sur, but there is good reason why Runner's World named it Best Destination Marathon and third best marathon in the U.S. (after NYC and Boston).
The 3:45 am bus to the start, 2 mile Hurricane Point climb smack in the middle, and repeating monster hills are a cake walk once you experience the endless breathtaking views, amazing volunteer staff, mile-by-mile fueling options (including bananas, oranges and strawberries!), supportive roadside cattle (they'll moo for you), and the awesome race support.
This race was so wonderful I cried. I couldn't have picked a better marathon as my first.
